All modern decking timbers, when cared for and installed correctly, will last at least 25 years.

When your deck is installed, the timber needs to be dry. Not just surface dry, but dry all the way through.  Depending on the width of the timber boards the minimum gap between 86/90mm boards is 4 – 5mm and for 140mm boards the gap should be at least 6mm.

When your timber absorbs water, through rain and humidity, it swells.

Think about it like this…if each board expanded by only 2mm on each side and you have a 4mm gap, they’d be touching. If the expansion increased to 2.1mm on each board, one if not both boards would likely start to buckle and lift.

You don’t need to go overboard, but you do need a gap. At Made By Mobbs Landscapes, we use a 4mm gap on 70mm wide boards, a 5mm gap on 86/90mm boards and 7mm gap on 140mm wide boards.

If left to weather for a few weeks (depending on the weather and location), the greenish tones associated with the preserving treatment will leach out and a lovely grey hue can be sealed in with a clear oil.
